Disney has announced today that it is replacing its Cinderella Castle projection show, “The Magic, The Memories and You!” with a brand new nighttime show called, “Celebrate the Magic.” The new show will feature many of the most beloved “elements from the current show” along with all-new effects, music and storytelling. Your last chance to see “The Magic, The Memories and You!” will be on September 3, 2012 which marks the final showing of the current show at both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom.
We hope “Celebrate the Magic” builds on the successes of the current show, while reducing some of the more gimmicky attributes of it. Moments in “The Magic, the Memories and You! such as Buzz Lightyear proudly stating, “To infinity and beyond!,” and Cinderella Castle appearing to rocket off into the sky are breathtaking. But they were doused with marketing gimmicks like the the inclusion of Disney’s PhotoPass pictures that rather than blending into the overall storyline caused the show to have sudden stops and starts, a far cry from the usual flow of great Disney nighttime shows. Still we are really excited about the possibilities open to Disney Imagineers with this projection technology and though we’d prefer to see this tech integrated seamlessly as part of a nighttime spectacular like “Wishes!” rather than as a standalone experience we hope that the “Celebrate the Magic,” show propels it to a new level.
Disney also made mention that this new experience would be exclusive to the Magic Kingdom and would not arrive at Disneyland park. Instead guests of Disneyland have the return of “it’s a small world” holiday to look forward to along with the recently announced new live entertainment show that will debut within Fantasyland Theatre next year, Summer 2013.
