We’ve been here before. High above the Downtown Disney fray of construction that will turn it into Disney Springs but it didn’t look like this. The massive construction site now is more massive. More dirt has been moved, more buildings have been erected, more brick laid. More of Disney Springs is coming into light and yet seeing it only makes us feel it’s nothing like what we’ve seen before. It’s a gargantuan multi-stage project and even though some of it nears its early 2015 completion dates it just seems to foretell of just how much bigger this construction symphony will get before Disney Springs takes the stage in full fashion in 2016. Taking pictures of the construction site in nearly perfect Florida weather was thrill enough but just taking in the enormity of what was before my eyes again wasn’t easy. Sure one expects steel and concrete to replace dirt and gravel, one expects progress to be made but seeing it in person throws all expectations out the window and left me once again in awe of the power of Disney to transform itself time and time again. As we see the final remnants of Pleasure Island give way to The Landing and more, it’s going to be tough to bear for some who must now hold onto memories that are all too distant. But for me, Pleasure Island remains but a mythical dream I never got to fully experience because my age wouldn’t allow and so I see the potential, perhaps not for the sheer fun of the place that came before but for a refined, improved and expanded Downtown Disney that lines up more with what Disney is today. The latter isn’t exactly the definition of special but the story of Disney Springs isn’t complete yet nor is our understanding of just how large and transformative the changes will be. But from high above I can tell you this isn’t just an expansion, it’s an adventure, a gamble on the future of Downtown Disney and that is somewhere we haven’t been before in a long time. Join us in a photo tour of the massive construction site and make sure to leave your thoughts on Disney Springs and give your farewell to Pleasure Island.
