The Walt Disney Company has shared part of its vision for the new reimagined Epcot. Disney will reintroduce a classic EPCOT styled plaza back to Epcot’s entrance with beautiful new trees, planters and a return of the iconic fountain design that once stood before Spaceship Earth. The project will move the Leave a Legacy monuments that had been quite the eyesore and were installed as part of Epcot’s then Millenium Celebration. Leave a Legacy will find a new home outside of the Epcot entrance gates. There are other details to make fans of classic EPCOT rejoice. These include park icon flags that will adorn the entryway buildings on either side leading up to Spaceship Earth.
Epcot is just the latest Disney Park to be Reimagined.
Over the next several years, Epcot will see transformations in much the same way that Disney’s Animal Kingdom and soon Disney’s Hollywood Studios will have undergone. Epcot will be just the latest to usher in a major revamp that will attempt to modernize its offerings. To do so you must begin with the entrance, the reveal of the theme park and its iconic Spaceship Earth geodesic dome. But the announcements for Epcot don’t end there, as there’s a ton more work going on to renovate the park.
Da Mouse’s Take
As an advocate for much of classical Disney design this entranceway represents a small victory for me and I know many of you out there. It goes to show just why the Disney community must speak up even when it is in opposition to the efforts we see at the destination we adore because in the end, corporations inevitably have to listen to their customers and make changes accordingly. That being said I do wish there was some more innovation presented in this design alongside the harkening back to Epcot’s roots. Something like special lighting panels that could transform the entranceway with a bit of Disney EPCOT magic would go a long way towards that end. But for now some Epcot nostalgia goes far enough for us and like you we’ll rejoice in all of this classic Epcot glory.
